Private education and preceptorial practices from the 15th to the 19th century

Alongside the advances made in the area of school-based education, the period between the 15th and the 19th century saw the development of private and home-based education based on a variety of resources, particularly the private preceptor. This collection of articles investigates these practices through different approaches, situations and periods: the education of princes in the north of Italy in the 15th century, which was influenced by humanism and the court culture; the German protestant system of the modern age, in which public education was combined with private tuition delivered by teachers who lived with families; 18th and early 19th-century France, where basic education was often acquired outside formal schooling; the question of family-based education in the context of compulsory education during the French Third Republic.
