An investigation in Tunisia

Since the revolution, Tunisia has attracted many researchers, journalists and experts. A huge number of articles and of media discourses have multiplied about social and political mobilizations, the results of the October 2011 elections and conflits opposing artists and activists on the one side, the judiciary system on the other side. But if Tunisia has been in the center of international news since the revolution and further, the electoral victory of islamists, none scientific research has been produced about the relations between artists and authoritarian institutions. The socio-economic conditions of art creation and the ways art wolds are structured by gender have not been more documented. This book is based on a long sociological inquiry and fills a deficit in scientific production : it analyzes in details the Tunisian literary universe and the ways it is structured by gender. It deconstructs the widespread representations of Tunisia as an « exception ». Beyond this country, it explains how gender and domination are produced and reproduced in an authoritarian context.
