Tracés, hors-série 2015

This special issue of Tracés originates in the idea that academia, however globalised, is far from homogeneous: although the work of many foreign scholars is (more or less) accessible to French academics, it is not equally read and debated. There is therefore a point in discussing specifically the work of foreign scholars who may occupy a central place in their own academia, but have not so far received in France the degree of attention that they deserve. This special issue is structured around the translation of original papers and chapters by foreign scholars, which have been selected by the editorial team as illustrative of a lack of adequate reception of certain works. Each translation is accompanied with a series of original papers which discuss them, offer elements of context about their writing and reception, and reflect on the contribution they might offer. A first series of text relate to the work of Pakistani-born anthropologist Saba Mahmood, and more specifically to her study of women's religious movements in Egypt in the 1990s, which led to her redefining the relationship between feminism and Islam. The second series of texts focuses on the animal problem, as explored in the contributions by Friederike Schmitz and Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka which are translated here, which have revived debates on animal ethics and on the broader relation between humans and animals. The other papers examine animal politics, animal rights and the situation of animal studies.
