Reading Materialism

This book examines, through a series of essays moving from Enlightenment thought to the contemporary period, the problem of materialism in the history of philosophy and the history of science. Themes discussed include classic topics like mind-body relations, the status of the brain, and atheism, but also less traditional ones like dreams, laughter, embodiment and the emergence of a 'New Materialism'. It should be of interest to historians of philosophy, literature and science but also to contemporary philosophers (of mind, of biology, of science).
