Drawing borders

Despite a stereotypical perception of a globalized world without borders, these never cease to challenge scholars through two major questions: what happens to the boundaries between geographical, linguistic and cultural spaces in a globalized, cosmopolitan, dynamic and urbanized world? How are borders (re) produced and / or shaped by social practices? Through a multidisciplinary perspective bringing together approaches from sociology, anthropology and geography, this book proposes a reflection about the way in which borders are identified, conceived, or produced in interaction, by the practices of social actors. Confronted with the powerful heuristic capacity of the notion of frontier, we adhere to a resolutely praxeological approach. Such an approach focuses on the social practices and takes into consideration the historicity, and the inherently situated, embodied and material dimension of the boundaries. Henceforth, borders are not conceived as a finished and irrevocable product. They are viewed as an ongoing process, drawn by a multiplicity of social actors and situated in a variety of contexts.
