Oil and bribery
The importance of Mi.Fo.Biali Case in the relations between Italy and Libya (1969-1979)

Weapons, oil and bribery: these are the main focus of this book. When one evokes the Italian "Years of Lead", what comes to mind is terrorism, assassinations and economic recession. The logics of power are rarely the centre of interest. This book intends to understand the underlying political system of the 1970s through the relations with Libya. In 1969, colonel Qadhafi came to power and did not handle his Italian counterparts carefully. He expelled the Italian community from the Libyan territory but offered at the same time some lucrative contracts mixing arms dealings and petroleum agreements with ENI. Negotiations of that kind would then increase. In Italy, the so-called P2 masonic lodge extended its influence; the Guardia di Finanza supervised an oil smuggling supplied by Libyan imports, in exchange of payolas to the main military and political leaders. Corruption was taking hold. This book will concentrate on the Mi.Fo.Biali Case, drawn up in 1975 by the Italian intelligence, which gives us an extremely valuable evidence of it.
