Singing the collective

This dossier focuses on all songs with a certain symbolic charge, endowed with emotional potential and integrated into certain ritual practices, which celebrate, objectify and reinforce the existence of a human collective. National anthems occupy a prominent, but not exclusive place in the articles, which deal with the conditions of emergence and existence of these songs, their linguistic and musical characteristics, and their many social uses. Allowing a comparative perspective, different countries, different social groups and different eras are called forth: Amazonian anthems celebrating nature and transcending frontiers, a New Caledonian anthem designed to express and attempt to master a diversity of languages and cultures, a feminist anthem reappropriated by the new generations, regimental anthems composed under the particular conditions of the Great War. Concerning the French national anthem, it is analysed from the point of view of the role of melody in its success.
