Festschrift for Bernard Colombat

This book presents a collection of studies on the history of linguistics as a tribute to Bernard Colombat, an internationally renowned specialist in Latin and French grammatical traditions, and the mastermind behind numerous digital and editorial projects, both collective and individual.

The contributions reflect Bernard Colombat's very diverse interests and are divided into four main themes: the categorisation of words, authors and remarkable works in the history of linguistics, linguistic tools (corpora, dictionaries, databases) and studies with transversal perspectives. The sources analysed cover a very wide time span in the history of linguistics, from Sanskrit, Greek and Latin sources to modern descriptive grammars, including Arabic treatises, mediaeval manuscripts and Renaissance grammars.

This great diversity of themes and sources makes the book a valuable resource for non-historical linguists, for students entering this vast field for the first time, and for the general reader: the articles collected testify to the scope of Bernard Colombat’s scientific career, and his ability to bring together very diverse research to provide a rich and nuanced vision of linguistic reflection through the ages.
