New Perspectives in Recognition Theory
Readings and Investigations

This volume introduces the reader to contemporary debates on recognition, examines the strength of the theories and arguments that shape these debates, analyses the historical origins of the paradigm of recognition, discusses the critical potential of recognition theories in various areas of scientific and philosophical research, and thus offers new perspectives on much-debated issues in social, political and philosophical thinking. Historically, recognition is a key concept in German philosophy (both German Idealism and Critical Theory). While it continues to be a remarkably fecund concept in debates on politics, law, economics, feminism and labour theory, "recognition" is also well suited to elucidate and help solve problems facing scholars in other disciplines such as aesthetics and educational studies. In making this case, the authors of the book show that recognition plays a major role in a wide range of areas of social life.

This volume follows La « reconnaissance » comme principe de la Théorie critique, in the same collection. It is intended for all readers interested in recognition theory. In particular, it is intended for scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in philosophy, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, cross-cultural and multicultural studies, and other allied fields in the humanities and social sciences.
