The Invitation to the Voyage
Post-colonial Geography of Domestic Tourism in Việt Nam

How do we become a tourist? Can we rethink tourism globalization looking at the "arts of doing" of those who invent it today? This book provides a perspective from Việt Nam, a country that is still poor but has observed a significant growth of domestic tourism over the past twenty years.

Field observations and biographical materials collected since 2005 across the country inform on the ways the Vietnamese are learning to travel in a country where both wealth and inequalities have been rising since Đổi Mới. This field work is completed by a critical analysis of the political and normative management of domestic tourism, on the one hand by the State and on the other hand by global institutions of tourism. The research highlights the social and spatial constraints that these tourists have to deal with. Colonization and socialism are here understood not only as historical periods, but as a set of organizations, values, actors and practices that are now mobilized as resources to build tourist mobility. Their geographical study reveals the creativity of domestic tourists in the sometimes conflictual hybridizations and circulations of their practices and imaginary.

Doing so, this book aims to bring forward a decentered view of globalization in order to better understand the complex reconfiguration of power relations in post-colonial societies.
